The term derives from "Keramos", clay, vase of clay. The art of producing crockery or other objects is based on the property of the clay that make a plastic lump with the water. This lump is made solid, hard and can’t be changed by cooking. The pieces of pottery are a very important physical proof (whether qualitatively or quantitatively)  of the most ancient cultures. The turning of pottery is made with the potter’s wheel.  The models, that are still used nowadays, are very similar to the prehistoric ones. After the object is moulded the pottery is exposed to sunlight to dry; then it’s refined with knives and scrapers. Many artisans usually make an elaborated decoration painting ornamental subjects and figures. The family Volpi, that is made up of potters from some generations, wants to give expression to her love for this trade that always positively amazes. We can still write a thousand pages about the workmanship of the clay but we prefer you to come here and visit our workshop in Portoferraio, Loc.
